Who we are

Koan is operated by [Koan Social Inc.]. We'll refer to ourselves as "Koan", "we", "us", or "our" throughout this document. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at hello@koan.social.

Why this policy exists

We collect information about you when you use Koan. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it. We want you to be able to make an informed decision about sharing your data with us. If we don't say we're doing something here, we won't do it.

Koan is not intended for anyone under the age of 18. If you are under 18, please do not use Koan.

What data we collect

Account data — your name, email address, and password when you register.

Content data — everything you post, reply to, or otherwise contribute to Koan. This includes when it was created, whether it has been edited, and whether you are the original author.

Technical data — your IP address, which we log for security and moderation purposes. We do not collect browser fingerprints, device identifiers, or tracking data of any kind.

Profile data — your display name and biography, if you choose to add one.

What we do not collect

We do not collect payment information — Koan is currently free to use.

We do not collect special category data — we do not ask about your race, ethnicity, religion, health, sexual orientation, political views, or any other sensitive category. If you choose to share such information in your posts, you are making it public.

We do not use advertising trackers, third-party pixels, or tracking cookies of any kind.

Why we collect it

We collect account data to operate the platform and verify that you are a real person. We collect content data because your posts and replies are the platform. We collect technical data (IP addresses) for security purposes and to support moderation where necessary. Our lawful basis for this processing is the performance of our contract with you (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)) and our legitimate interest in operating a safe platform (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).

How long we keep it

We keep your data for as long as you have an account with us. If you request deletion of your account, we will action that request within 48 hours. We may retain minimal records where required by law. Posts you delete are soft-deleted — they are removed from public view but a record is retained for moderation purposes. Replies to deleted posts remain visible but closed.

Who we share it with

We do not sell, rent, lease, or share your personal data with third parties for commercial purposes. We will share data with law enforcement if required to do so by a lawful legal order. We use third-party service providers to operate the platform who process data only as necessary to deliver their services.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR and applicable Canadian and international privacy law, you have the right to access the data we hold about you, correct inaccurate data, request deletion of your data, object to processing, and request a copy of your data in a portable format. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@koan.social. We will respond within one month.

Cookies

We use only functional cookies — the kind that keep you logged in and allow the platform to operate. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party cookies.

Changes to this policy

We will post notice of any material changes to this policy. Continued use of Koan after a change is posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
